Current Events

Current Events is ongoing through-out the year.  Each student will have a current event due at least once a month, usually more often.   Please check with your student.

Students are to pick a news article from a reputable newspaper (examples: Wpg Free Press, Wpg Sun, Globe and Mail).   Students are to hand in a copy of their article (it may be printed from on-line).  There are newspapers available in class.

The student has to write two paragraphs.  The first paragraph is a summary paragraph (Who is the article about, When, Where, What happened, and Why did it happen) about the article’s contents.  The second paragraph is the student’s opinion on the topic(s) in the article.  Students should explain why it is an important or relevant topic to a Winnipegger, Manitoban, Canadian, or World Citizen.

The student’s opinion should be based on fact.  This means that when an opinion is given, it is backed up with fact – usually from the article.  Example:  Saying people with purple hair are very intelligent is an opinion that is unsupported by fact. When an opinion is given, base it on reality, not just on one’s personal perception.

Please refer to the marking sheet, outline, and current event guide sheet.
